Bummer day for games media
Between the news of Giant Bomb being gutted by Fandom and Polygon being sold to Valnet, it's hard not to wonder whether there's a world where games media still exists at all in a few years. The past several years has seen countless publications close up shop or be stripped for parts. There's fewer jobs available now than ever with so few publications left, and those that do remain are constantly operating under corporate leadership who has no clue what they're doing. Feels like the death of the field is quickly approaching.
It's not a surprising turn of events given journalism as a whole is suffering similar problems, but it's still depressing to see it happen to a field I've followed for a good part of my life. I once hoped to break into the field proper and get a full-time job writing about games. I gave up on making that a reality a while ago for many reasons, but there was always some part of me that still hoped that maybe an opportunity would come up and I'd try taking my shot. It's ultimately good I didn't given the way things have gone, but still hurts to see it all fall apart like this. Truly the end of era.
