Idle thoughts on Dragon's Dogma 2

Playing Dragon's Dogma 2 and walking everywhere as much as possible has got me thinking about trying something similar in Elden Ring. Much, much bigger world in that, so maybe not a great idea due to how much more time consuming that would be. But also: what if.

Dragon's Dogma definitely has been making me think about how enriching it can be to actually have to travel in games, though. Walking the same paths again and again can become tiresome, yes (usually take that as a sign to stop playing for now), but it's also kinda refreshing? Makes you have to actually engage with the space, to learn the ins and outs of the routes you take. Makes the world design matter.

The convenience of fast travel in most games renders so much of the world moot that it's like -- why did you even make such a massive space to begin with? Might as well not exist with how often games end up encouraging you to just hop between fast travel points. Like, fast travel isn't inherently a bad thing, but the way its used does make it feel almost like a failure of design on some level. If no one actually wants to spend time in the massive world you've built beyond the absolute bare minimum, why make it in the first place?
