So Waypoint is "back" (in name only)
Vice decided to surprise everyone by deciding to spin up another videogame vertical using the old Waypoint name. Very weird news.
It made it's "comeback" with several articles all written by one person. Seems like only one guy is heading up the new Waypoint, which, uh, setting aside all the other obvious problems here, doesn't seem like a great idea? That's a lot to put on one person's shoulders, especially if they're looking to uphold any measure of what Waypoint was.
Let's just get this out of the way: I can't fault anyone who may be writing there. The space is fucking dire right now and people gotta make rent somehow. Job's a job.
That said, this fucking sucks. It's so crass. Bringing back Waypoint in name only to become yet another throwaway games vertical is terrible. Not only because it disrespects what Waypoint built and achieved, but also because Vice still hasn't paid out everyone's severance. To hollow out a beloved publication is awful on its own. To do so while also refusing to pay what the former staff is contractually owed is fucking despicable. Absolutely ghoulish behavior. Fuck Vice.
