Trying out Linux
Decided to install it on my laptop to properly give it a try. I only use it for super basic stuff (writing and web browsing, mostly), so about as low-risk as I can get.
It’s... an operating system. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just works so far. I expected something different given the ways people talk about it. Figured I'd need to be, like -- super knowledgeable about computers or something. Bit of a learning curve in spots, for sure, but it's been easy to navigate so far. Not that different from Windows, though maybe that’s just the benefits of choosing a beginner-friendly version?
Went with Linux Mint since that seems to be one of the most commonly recommended options. Haven’t had any issues yet. Only slight problem I ran into was with my word processor not saving documents, but it sorted itself out quickly. I expect I'll eventually run into trouble, as that's unavoidable with computers, but for now it's been smooth sailing at least.
Been thinking of giving Linux a shot ever since Microsoft announced that Recall feature for Windows. The AI bullshit was already pushing me away, but the potential security nightmare Recall posed was the thing that got me to seriously consider swapping. Also with Windows 10 support ending this year, I figure it’s worth learning some Linux basics in case anyone else in the house stuck on Windows 10 needs to swap. Don't see myself adding it to the desktop anytime soon since I'm still dependent on Windows for a lot of stuff, but at least I know I've got a potential fallback now should it ever come to that.
